The Empath (2024)
Oil on canvas, 10"x8"
The Empath delves into the subtle dynamics of emotional absorption, illustrating how empaths often become the emotional ashtrays of their loved ones without even realizing it. In this work, empathy is reimagined as both gift and burden. The figure’s head transforms into a decorative ashtray, a vessel filled with the remnants of others’ sorrows. It reflects on the quiet cost of absorbing what is not one’s own, inviting the viewer to consider where compassion ends and self-erasure begins.
The painting also draws on the vivid palette that inspired it — soft coral orange, subdued earthy green, and turquoise, echoing the atmosphere of Mexico City. These hues weave through the work to soften the heaviness of the subject, creating a dreamlike quality that disarms before the weight of the narrative fully settles in.
Through this interplay of color and symbol, The Empath reflects on the complexities of such relationships — the delicate balance between supporting others and maintaining one’s own emotional well-being. By pairing surreal form with layered meaning, the work offers a contemplative space to consider the unspoken burdens of empathy and the importance of self-awareness in emotional connections.
